The longest night
was when you fell asleep
right next to my beating heart
which housed you for so long
you made a current flow through me
and my heart pounded like never before
the veins were revolting
my breath, accelerating
my lips, anticipating
How I long to tell you once again
how I love you
when you’re sleeping
when you’re crawled up
like a yarn ball into my kitten-like hands
when you’re making those little noises
under your breath
like calling for the wind
to take us away into the night sky.
I love you
and your oddly-cut fingernails
and your unusually large toe nail
and those lines on your forehead
that remind me of the years
we have spent together
and those years we spent searching
for broader horizons to sail
I love that dimple on your right cheek
how it doesn’t seem to belong there
and the touch of your skin
as it brushes through my bare chest.
How I wanted to teach my arms
to form circles to conquer you
and embrace you as you dream
of green grass and Shaun the Sheep.
How I wanted to take you closer
to me, to my heart, to my dreams.
And take my lips
inches closer to yours.
So we can celebrate the night,
the longest night,
when you fell asleep,
next to my thumping heart
and this empty goblet of rhum.
